The questions people ask first.
Twelve straight answers. If yours is not here, a person is one message away.
What it costs.
Once per tax year, and what happens if we get it wrong.
Is £99 really the whole price?
Yes. Keeping records is free. You pay £99 once for that year’s return: it unlocks the reading of your statements and receipts and the filing, and it is £99 in January too. No subscription, no surcharge for filing late in the window, nothing to cancel.
What if the return is wrong?
If HMRC finds an error that comes from Swiftmore’s calculation, rather than from a figure you gave or an answer you approved, we refund the £99 and prepare and file the amendment at no charge. Tell us within twelve months of filing. Clause 9 of the terms has the wording.
Who it is for.
And what it cannot do yet.
Who is Swiftmore for?
Sole traders and landlords filing a Self Assessment return. If your year includes employment income or a property sale, those pages are covered too.
Do I need to file a Self Assessment at all?
If you were self-employed and took more than £1,000, let a property for more than £1,000, had untaxed income, or HMRC has written asking for a return, then yes. The nine-question checker on the tools page gives you a straight answer and the pages your return needs.
What can Swiftmore not do yet?
Partnership, foreign income, trust and residence pages, VAT returns and the quarterly updates for Making Tax Digital. All are planned for 2027, subject to change, and the list is kept on the plain English page. Limited company accounts are not planned. If your year needs one of these, Swiftmore says so before you pay.
Do I still need an accountant?
Many people with a straightforward year don’t. Swiftmore asks the questions and fills the boxes; you check the summary and press submit.
What about Making Tax Digital?
Swiftmore files your annual return now. Quarterly updates arrive in 2027, written from the same records, so nothing is re-keyed. If HMRC has already moved you onto quarterly updates, you need other software for those this year.
What you can claim.
The three things people ask about most.
Can I claim mortgage interest on my rental property?
Not as an expense. For a residential let, HMRC gives a tax reduction worth 20% of the interest instead, through the finance-costs box on the UK property pages. Swiftmore asks for the interest you paid and puts it through that rule for you.
I work from home. Can I claim anything?
Yes. Either HMRC’s flat rate, which depends on the hours you work from home each month, or a fair share of your actual household bills. Swiftmore asks which and works out the figure.
Can I claim for my van or car?
Yes, one of two ways. HMRC’s flat rate, 45p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles and 25p after that, or the business share of your actual running costs plus capital allowances. Once you use the flat rate for a vehicle you keep it for as long as that vehicle is in the business.
After you file.
What happens next, and how to change it.
What happens after I press submit?
Your return goes straight to HMRC and the submission reference is stored with it. You see the tax to pay and when it is due: 31 January, and 31 July too if payments on account apply to you.
Can I change my return after filing?
Yes. HMRC lets you amend a Self Assessment return for twelve months after the filing deadline. You edit the answer in Swiftmore and file the amendment the same way.
